Im Südosten des Heidegebietes Balloerveld, westlich von Assen, liegt ein von ehemaligen Thermokarst-Erscheinungen geprägtes Sandgebiet, in dem es teilweise zu Dünenbildung gekommen ist. Späteiszeitliche flache Seen haben sich teilweise zu Kesselmooren entwickelt. Flachere und trockene Partien sind mit gut ausgeprägten 'Celtic Fields' bedeckt. Ein breiter Altwegefächer durchquert das Gebiet von SSW nach NNE und hat dort die Parzellierungsspuren weitgehend zerstört. Auch die zickzackförmige deutsche Panzersperre aus dem zweiten Weltkrieg (am linken Bildrand) hat 'Celtic Fields' durchschnitten. Mindestens zwei Grabhügel sind längs des Altweges erkennbar. In the southeast of the Balloerveld heathland, west of Assen, lies a sandy area characterized by former thermokarst phenomena, in which dune formation has occurred in places. Late-glacial shallow lakes have partly developed into kettle bogs. Flatter and dry areas are covered with well-pronounced 'Celtic Fields'. A wide ancient road fan crosses the area from SSW to NNE and has largely destroyed the traces of parcellation. The zigzag-shaped German anti-tank barrier from the Second World War (on the left edge of the picture) also cut through 'Celtic Fields'.
